What is Vastu?
Vastu in Sanskrit means place where we stay or home.
What are nine directions of Vastu?
Four Primary directions – North or Uttar / उत्तर, East or Purva / पूर्व, South or Dakshin / दक्षिण and West or Pacchim / पश्चिम
Other intermediate directions – Northwest or Vayavya/ वायव्य, Northeast or Ishanya / ईशान्य, South east or Agneya / आग्नेय, Southwest or Nairutya/ नैरुत्य, Center or Bramhasthan / ब्रम्ह्मस्थान

What do you mean by structural and operational parameters?
Any parameter which can be changed easily by vastu owner is called operational parameter. eg. You can place your TV as per your convenience, but you cant change your entrance door at your will. So entrance door is structural but TV position is operational.
How about windows or open spaces in tilted vastu?
For sake of calculation of Vastu Index, we consdier a window facing any intermediate direction as a window facing in each primary direction. Example if in tilted vastu, window faces northwest, consider this as one window facing north and one facing west.
What to do in case of irregular shaped vastu / cut vastu?
Often house layouts are not rectangular. Especially in today's flat culture, buildings are made to make best use of FSI and sell maximum area. This results in irregular shaped vastu. For calculation of irregular shaped or cut vastu, we try to fit them in regular rectangular blocks aligned along primary directions. See example 2 and 3 in how to find directions.
What if we have more than one bedroom?
In case you have more than one bedroom, provide all the locations of bedrooms. Even in case of single bedroom, it may be spread across more than one directional blocks, provide details of all such directional blocks in which bedroom is present. Vastu Index is build to capture such scenarios.
What if we have more than one kitchen?
In case you have more than one kitchen, provide all the locations of kitchen while calculating index. Even in case of single kitchen, it may be spread across more than one directional blocks, provide details of all such directional blocks in which kitchen is present. Vastu Index is build to capture such scenarios.
What if we have more than one livingroom?
In case you have more than one livingroom, provide all the locations of livingroom while calculating index. Even in case of single livingroom, it may be spread across more than one directional blocks, provide details of all such directional blocks in which livingroom is present. Vastu Index is build to capture such scenarios
My entrance is located in North direction but it faces east?
Many vastu consultants use door facing direction as parameter in evaluating vastu. However we feel it's the door location which makes a difference rather the door facing direction. These consultants believe door should not face south or should face north. However lets look at example below where door location is in south as per our methodology while it still faces north. (See example) We lay importance to where the door or entrance is located rather that which direction it faces. In modern vastu location of entrance determines layout of other elements of vastu which makes it important.
What about modern equipment?
Vastushastra was developed more than 3000 years ago. People then didn't enjoy modern equipments like fan, AC, chimney, exhaust, coolers, etc. Today we can however get benefits of such equipments. Vastushastra is therefore silent on use and interference of modern equipments. These modern equipments improve living condition in our house. Modern vastushastra may compliments these modern equipments and can help reduce dependence of their use.
How to place heaving objects?
Traditional vastushastra believe in placing heavy objects in particular directions. We feel such objects are beyond context of Vastu Index and operational in nature.
What about other rooms like store rooms, guest rooms, prayer room, study room, etc?
We feel such rooms are not present in houses and not a general parameter. However these rooms can be considered in the context of activities performed. Guestrooms can be considered similar to bedroom. Activities in prayer room and study room can fall context of livingroom.
Combined WC and Bathroom?
Modern attached bathrooms can be considered a WC and a bathroom separately while calculating index.
What about Multi Floor vastu/ Duplex?
Calculate Vastu Index for each floor.
Is Vastushastra valid outside India?
We believe traditional vastushastra was developed observing relevant conditions in India. Its use outside India can be contested. It is left to judgement of vastu owner for any applications of vastushastra outside India.
Any benefits of pyramids/ lamps / water bodies?
These factors may affect local environmental parameters and are operational in nature. Vastu Index is based only on structural parameters.
God / spirituality and Vastushastra?
We believe Vastu Shastra was developed in era when general people would not comprehend terms like air circulation, humidity, magnetic forces, etc. Spirituality was thus used as tool to convince people about vastushastra and its use. It is left to the judgment of Vastu owner whether to believe in spirituality as basis for vastushastra.
